Could you clarify your question please? The earth's orbit IS the position of the earth relative to the sun.

the distance from the sun affects the speed at which the earth travels in it's orbit, if that's what you mean. But I am just guessing at what your question is trying to get at.

I'm not sure I understand the question correctly, but Earth's orbit is slightly eliptical, varying from about 94,500,000 miles to 91,800,000 miles.

We're *closer* to the sun in January and farthest in June.
