The word 'orchard' does not entail a specific number of trees.
However, to call a few trees an orchard would seem silly. I would guess that you would need at least a dozen trees before you could get away with calling the feature an orchard.

I consider an orchard to be an orchard if is is a matrix of trees greater than 2X2. So 3 rows and 3 columns of trees represents the smallest orchard according to my own personal definition. I have no idea what would be considered an orchard in the horticulture world.

we've got areas of fruit trees we call orchards - each has about 25 trees. One is straight lines, one random.
I think they both count.
I have seen people refer to 3 trees in thier back garden as an orchard. Its a bit silly really.
mind you, we also know someone who calls a 40x40 foot patch of grass a paddock...now that is stretching it !
