The point is, with Christmas, is that it is a Christian celebration in a largely Christian country. How exactly do you downgrade Christmas anyway - tell people to celebrate it more quietly???? Apart from that - we are told that we need to integrate people into British culture - well celebrating Christmas is a key was of integrating people into the culture because it is a key cultural identifier - that (almost) everybody celebrates - even if for most people it has lot it spiritual message.
If people want to come to this country, then they should be willing to participate in its culture and traditions - people do not come here in order to water down what is unique about the culture, nor to have their own culture superimposed on the indigenous culture.
Like the new saying goes - if you don't like it - bugg er off.

For Xians there is a specific Sunday in the Church calandar upon which to celebrate Xmas among those of their kind. In a multicultural society like America it is not right that any one religion should dominate the culture. There should be a secular holiday at the same time of year to involve all Americans in the REAL IMPORTANCE of Xmas which is to boost the national economy.

You can't please everyone all the time. If the majority of people in a country celebrate the holiday, then it should be officially observed. How would we be able to observe every single religion's holidays? We'd end up having major celebrations every week of the year! Hmm...maybe that's a good idea...
If I were to move to another country that didn't celebrate the holidays that I knew, or celebrated them differently, I wouldn't DREAM of being offended by what they were doing! I'm in THEIR country, after all. I need to adapt to their practices. That doesn't mean that I have to completely lose my national identity, but I shouldn't act like I'm superior to them by being offended by what they do.

This whole issue might mean more if we could really compare Chistianity in this country to other faiths elsewhere.
Christmas isn't really a religeous event in the UK any more, whereas Ramadan or Passover are fastideously observed.
Islamic, Jewish and Hindu (not to mention others) countries take their religion far more seriously than the UK takes Christianity!

The English Weather is to be banned next, in case it causes offence to those living here from desert countries
Then the English Language, afterall (first answerer) why should one language be given preference over another?

Its so annoying.
Why not just ban anything British in case we offend any other culture that lives in this country. I'm really sick of it .
If people choose to live in this country they must respect OUR culture and our traditions. If it offends people why dont they go and live somewhere else. We are so soft its just ridiculous.
Also I'm fed up with the government telling us what to eat what to drink etc

They can ban it for all I care! Christmas used to be special when I was a child, but now the majority just get drunk, behave in a yobbish way and get into debt - for what?
