Hey, it was "back in the day" when the moral fiber of this country was much more uptight. Heck, do you remember "All in the Family" when Archie Bunker flushed the toilet on TV? It was the first time that sound was heard on TV and the media made a big deal out of it. Gives you a clue as to why they always (back then) showed married couples in separate beds.

This show was in the 1950's and back then they would not show couples sleeping in the same bed. They just thought it was not supposed to be shown on TV, especially with this being a sort of family show.

It was the 50's and the censors did not allow it. When Lucy was pregnant on the show and was obviously showing, they were not allowed to use the word "pregnant".

Now, in the 60's, the "Munsters" showed a married couple sharing the same bed. There was another show that did it first but most people remember that Herman and Lily Munster shared a bed.

At that time when those shows were on it was considered taboo to show a man and woman in the same bed on TV. Yes the characters were married (In Lucy and Ricky's case they were married in real life too) but that was a different generation, the censors and editors were more strict.

Because it was the 1950s. In case you are unaware of the cultural mores in the US back during this era, it was considered scandalous to have them in the same bed back then.

To do so implied that they were having intercourse, and during that time that subject was very taboo on network television. It really wasn't until the sexual revolution of the 1960s that this attitude started to loosen up a bit. By the 1970s, married couples were in the same bed (Brady Bunch, for example).

In those days the TV sensors would not allow them to show even married characters in the same bed. Married people did sleep in the same bed in real life, of course.

They wouldn't even let them say the word pregnant on "I Love Lucy".

How things have changed!

Lucy was having an affair with Fred Mertz.

Dick Van Dyke was just too tall for Laura. LOL

At that time, there were very strict guidlines on what could be shown on TV. On the Lucy show, they could not even say the word "pregnant" when she was pregnant, and she was married at the time too. The title of the show was, "Lucy Is Enceinte", which is French for pregnant. On the show, they could only say that she was expecting. My guess is that showing them in the same bed would also be prohibited.

Lucy and Rick slept in separate beds because if they show them in the same bed there would have been an up-roar about it. If there was an up-roar Desilu might have had to cancel the beloved I Love Lucy.

It's not unusual for people that have been married a long time to sleep in separate beds and even separate rooms. When the honeymoon is over reality sets in and practicality takes over.
