What was actually suggested was to downgrade the religious aspect of the event, not banning it. This will not actually affect the meaning of the event for many people at all or the way they celebrate it.
The UK may nominally be a Christian country but what percentage of people are actually practising Christians (I bet the majorityof people shouting loudest about Christmas are not). Christmas was imposed by the Christian Church on a pagan popluation who celebrated a midwinter festival around mid December. Most Christian celebrations were placed over the top of existing pagan ones. So actually the celebration is December is actually a pagan celebration. Many of the traditions such as bringing evergreens into the home, eating an awful lot and giving gifts are straight out of the pagan midwinter celebration.

The hysteria is because most people in this country have had enough of being told our culture and way of life comes second to all the immigrants and we are now to worried about upsetting other cultures. What makes theirs worth so much than ours?

It is really silly first off the majority of this country (if you go back far enough) will have roots in another one.

Second, Christmas is not even from this country it was created by the church when the country went from Pagan to Christian, it was so the general public did not loose out on a holiday. (note to the person complaining, the Pagan's call it Yule not Christmas) You will find alot of Christian holidays (not all) are around the same time as Pagan holidays as the majority of Christian countries were Pagan to begin with and the Church wanted to 'steal' those peopl away.

I think of it as both of a concern of a loss of religion and culture. The US is by and large a Christian country especially at its roots. The teaching of children good morality is best done in a religious and spiritual context. If we didn't have good morality, we would also have a lot of crime. And the context of a religion which does not find "love of nieghbor" as primary and center, risks loosing the ideals founded in the Constitution. If we cannot repect the individual, society breaks down and brings anarchy and so will break down the rule of law. This type of anarchy will eventually lead to opression as people cannot live that way for long.

Also, it should be realized that Islam is become of larger influence in Europe while Christianity is still on the decline. Many Islamic countries and cultures do not have many of the best features of the traditionally Christian culture where freedoms are respected, for instance.

Since Christmas has become commercialized in the US the religious aspect has been set aside. It is as if money, media and capitalism has re-framed the understanding of what Christmas is all about. If you think of it this way, I think you will understand. Companies are driven by profit. Churches, religion and families are much less so and are there for the benefit of much more then money. So you see, if culture is so highly influenced by our cash-driven society, shouldn't our concern be that we loose what is much more then that. The priceless "love of nieghbor" in our culture cannot be lost to the more "scrooge" love of money. And speaking your opinion of loosing meaning in Christmas is one attempt to regaining something quite precious and irreplaceable.

It's not the downgrading of Christmas itself that is the problem here, it's just that those in authority over us keep wanting to change our way of life so that we don't cause offence to minorities. I'm sure that other religions aren't offended but when you hear extremists wanting UK to become a Muslim state, and our government wanting to make changes so as not to cause offence you begin to wonder what will become of us and our country.

who's downgrading Christmas ? no longer me, no longer you,no person i understand. a pair of years in the past, I went to between the grandchildren's Nativity performs. we've very few 'diverse' religions the place I stay yet what rather 'made' it for me replaced into the little chinese language boy(Buddhist perhaps) introducing the lawsuits in Welsh -everybody replaced into clapping and wiping away a tear. The little Indian boy(Sikh) had a first-rate area too. In a neighbouring college the youngsters have been instructed to no longer take ham sandwiches of their packed lunches in case it offends a baby from yet another faith -it fairly is a Catholic college ! i presently went to France and introduced back some wine and candies. On arrival on the taxi rank the driving force (Muslim) refused to take us by way of fact it replaced into in the previous sunlight down and we had to look ahead to a Christian driving force(???!!!). My nicely-known driving force ,additionally a Muslim ,instructed me that he and his relatives LOVE Christmas and Halloween and all the flaws we do -it rather is why he lives here! And chinese language New year -oh goodie - yet one greater reason for a social gathering - we rejoice it -over the chinese language eating place -with them like they rejoice with us. What next ? a reforendum on in spite of the fact that if to maintain Christmas -nicely, all people nonetheless desirous to discover the Christmas Spirit -come to our abode- and that i permit you smoke, drink, consume ham, have salt on your chips and sugar on your tea

How many pagans have a holiday named after them? Last I heard Christ meant Jesus. Ergo, Christmas could have been named Jesusmas. Not a nice name for a pagan holiday.

Sure, it was assigned the season of winter celebration.

You are missing the point - it is OUR celebration - we are not forcing it on others - unlike other religions that force their beliefs down our throats.

To prove a point - ask you local council if you can arrange a Christian/Christmas street party - bet they say NO.

Ring them again and claim to be doing it for Diwali and you'll get a big YES.

It is the typical two faced hypocritical do gooder attitude that shags this country - not OK for us but OK for them.

If the foreigners would accept our ways as their own there would be no problems. We the true Americans born and raised in this country are sick off you all and your pushy ways.......I wish they would all just go back to where they belong....that is my opinion!
