I had a client where I acted as the middle man to deliver appliances to their location. By some fluke, the vendor delivered two televisions by mistake and when I tried to return the spare, they wrote it off saying it would cost them more in man hours and shipping to worry about it. This was almost a year ago. The project in question has since been completed and they have all of the equipment they requested and do not have any knowledge of the television. So basically their is a television with no owner. So as you can all predict my next question, is it wrong to take the television for myself. Thanks.

I would keep it. The vendor preferred to write it off, leaving you two choices: put it in the trash, or put it to use.
I wouldn't brag about it, or teach children that they should always look for a quick chance, but if asked I would say "it was surplus and they said I could haul it off."

Sounds to me as though the vendor deliberately made a gift to you. I don't know your jurisdiction's laws, but it may be illegal to take such a gift. You should make an appointment with a lawyer in your jurisdiction and ask, this is nothing to fool around with.

Oh, and if it's not illegal, then you should just realize the vendor gave you a thank-you gift for the business and hopes you will call on him again in the future.

I think it is ok, but if it is bothering you, you shouldnt keep it. If the vendor wont take it back, why dont you donate it to a good charity?

Since they have no knowledge of the tv, it would make sense to tell them if you truly concerned about morality and doing what is right. They may let you keep the tv but I wouldn't count on it.

It's your call though. I would call and tell them. But that's just me. My conscience wouldn't let me just keep the tv.
