The reports say "Christmas should be downgraded unless other religious festivals are marked on an even footing, a Government think-tank has said". So rather than downgrade Xmas why not upgrade Eid, Yom Kippur, etc?

I went to a mixed faith school and remember being intensely annoyed that the Jewish kids got their own special time off as well as the days enjoyed by the whole country. I also remember asking my parents if I could become Jewish too for the extra benefit.

So I'm happy to celebrate anybody's festivals. Just make sure we all get the same time off. Anyone agree?

When I lived in Singapore they had a public holiday for each of the imporant days in the major faiths practiced there. Great idea - lots of public holidays & you can celebrate if you want, or just enjoy the time off if you don't.

I am not a little tired of the campaign to reduce ant Christian festival> OK I know it is a pagan festival which has been converted to Christian use and that Christ was probably born round about February. What we actually have her is part of a campaign by some people who believe in nothing trying to placate people of every faith just as long as it is not Christian when other faiths who would actually be quite offended if Christian celebrations were downgraded. In other words these people are wasting our money and will serve only to offend everyone around them. I have noticed that he only ones who do not in one way or another celebrate Christmas are Jehovah's Witnesses who have a gift day at some other time

For the majority of people in Britain, Christmas is just a holiday in which we buy presents, have parties and just enjoy ourselves, for most it has nothing to do with it being a religious celebration, all other religious events are celebrated because it is a religious time and is important to the followers of these faiths, we should respect all religious times equally but lets not argue about Christmas as though it holds a deep meaning for us, for most it does not.

In any country the major religious festivals will be those of the religion of that country, in our case Christian. I have no problem with other faiths observing their religious festivals but I have no wish to. Labour Loonies are at it again. Political Correctness is going to one of our biggest problems in the coming years.

It's a part of British culture and tradition to celebrate Christmas, and has been for a long time. I see no reason to change it. I don't see any other cultures changing to suite us. If it's for the purpose of setting an example, a bit of common sense would set a better example.

Nope. I like bank holidays, I like parties, but NO religious or faith based festival should be officially endorsed by a secular state.
