The mediators don't really pay attention to what your being reported for and why. They just give you violations. The trolls are just plain nasty.

I think the most important part of free speech is not only using it, but allowing others to use it.

I started a now defunct forum a couple of years ago, and we had simple rules: If you go into the "anything goes" half of the forum, you will see ******, you will get called bad names, you will get the typical internet sleaze. In contrast, if you go into the clean forums, you can talk, share, and debate without spamming and trolling and it is heavily moderated. We made the clean forum a private institution and the dirty forum into a public free-for-all... and it worked well. That is until I got tired of managing it.

The point is, the best thing they can do is to make this a private institution. They need to clearly define what goes too far and actually review each situation. They need to take the power to report away from people that abuse it. They shouldn't throw violations at people for stating opinions that other people disagree with, but they should on personal attacks. Answers doesn't even have a debate element to it; you get to say one thing and that's it, and that should answer the question, not belittle somebody else's answer.

I think in time, trolling and flaming will find their way out of the system, because it won't be tolerated, and Answers will become more of what it set out to be.

nah, it'd be too stressful.
let's just all eat chocolate instead.
if everybody ate chocolate together, the world (including YA) would be a better place ...
did you know that chocolate contains a property that triggers the release of endorphins? gives one the feeling of being in love.
yep.
so says the immortal king of candy Willy Wonka ....
and anyways, if everyone was eating chocolate, we'd all be really loving, and everyone would love the trolls - although I don't know if the trolls would even exist, because THEY'D be loving too, and they wouldn't be reporting people, and the mediators would be too loving to send you violations and ooh I LOVE chocolate and I LOVE you and I just LOVE everybody!!!
chocolate for everyone!!!!!

hehe I need to stop but I just can't ... I swear I am NOT on drugs ...
are cocaine and cocoa related?
hehehehe .....

My theory is that some of the "mediators" are actually the trolls.

It's sad really.
