flotsam and jetsam are things afloat in the sea.
flotsam is usually attributed to things found after a shipwreck or after a big storm.
applied to a person it would mean he was displaced and is adrift on the sea of life by misfortunate events.

to be called jetsam would mean that you were adrift because you had been deemed worthless or burdensome by the ships crew and were tossed out on purpose.
