What would the Racing Carnival be like without women all frocked up with hats, and men in suits and ties?
I'd say 90% of women wear them, even some of the men too.
You will feel like you fit in more if you wear a hat. You don't need to buy an expensive one. Even Target sells nice hats or fascinators.
Go with the summer dress. Tuesday is going to be a beautiful 23. A cute hat will also help protect you from the sun :-)
Have fun at the Cup, and put a few dollars on Purple Moon!

The whole point of the races is to frock up whether you are in General Admission or not. If you were to turn up in jeans and a t-shirt, you would feel very much out of place. Hats arent as popular as they were a few years ago, but I would highly suggest at least wearing a fascinator. Unfortunately if you dont, you pretty much will be the odd one out.
A summer dress would be fine. Just head to spotlight or lincraft and pick up a small facinator, put it in your hair and get with the spirit of the day.
Wear comfortable shoes, and make sure that you have pre purchased your ticket.

You don't have to wear a hat but if you are going to be out in the sun for a few hours, I would recommend you do. You don't need to dress up either, jeans and a t-shirt are perfectly acceptable provided you are not going to the Members Area - you do need to dress up for that. Wear what you like as long as it is comfortable and start with comfortable shoes, you'll be doing a lot of standing and walking around.

first answer is right it is Australia where we do whatever we prefer but at Ascot in Perth most will wear a hat - the makers big day for selling their expensive little artworks! It can be fun even for those who never wear them, its only one day a year!
