Nowadays you have all these different types of ddr2 ram, so lets say i had an athlon 64X2 4200 with a 2000mhz fsb how would i figure out what type of ram to use so my ram would be in sync with my processor? thanks for the help

a 4x00 x2 series will run best on a PC2-6400 DDR2. Now memory are very affordable. Can get a 1gb for $53.00 and 2gb for $78.00. Are you going to be using Windows Vista? if yes, I will recommend 2gb of memory.
heres 2gb that mostly compatible with most motherboards.
Patriot Memory 2GB PC2-6400 DDR2 for $78.91 with no tax and free shipping.

Keep in mind that your motherboard will only take certain types and speed of Ram modules. A CPU won't work if the Ram modules don't meet the motherboard's requirements and the same with the Ram modules.

Better research your mobo's specs & Ram modules requirements first, before building a PC and deciding on a CPU

What does the system board support? Or don't you have one yet? Most of the manufacturer's I've seen are using DDR2 with the Athlon XPs, but that doesn't necessarily make it the best. Often, it just means it was the cheapest when they were building them.

Read the motherboard manual and it will tell you what kinds of RAM the MoBo will handle. From there select whatever suits your fancy. You really have to install only those types that the MoBo is designed for.

Hope this helps.

Pick the Motherboard FIRST. Then review the specifications. Some motherboards are FUSSY. So read the SPECS.
