My car's cooling fans sound like a jet engine while the car is running. When I shut off engine the cooling fans continue to run about 30 seconds.
What worries me is that I had this car for 6 years and the fan noise would only happen occasionally after long trips. Since about 4 months ago, this noise is occuring during and after every time I use the car...It has 59,000 miles on it...
Is this something I should be concerned about? I'm not sure what to do so any advice would be great.

I guess most of the people here don't remember how bad a 2001 Altima looks. That series was the worst looking of the three serires of Altimas . 2001 Corollas aren't that attractive either but they are cheaper to repair and operate. In it's defense, the Altima does have a 20 more hosepower but the engine is a lot bigger and the car weighs quite a bit more. Stick with the Corolla. It'll even be worth more in the long run.

Components controlling fan operation.
1) Temp sender unit - heat sink into head or block like a thermometer.
2) Thermo switch - acts on info from temp sender
These two units combine to activate the fan and control its speed. If they are faulty, then intermittent fan operation can result, but normally it would just shut off. More likely that you have a cooling problem and the units are trying to help.

This normal.
But check the reserve cooling tank when car is cold, if low add correct fluid and get the level of fluid to full marking. Do not over fill. Check level again after first trip if ok check it once a wk or at every fill ups(or when you take gas).
Read the owners manual, buy one from the dealer if you do not have it.

Sounds like the Cooling fans are getting old and tired, they might be sounding louder because they are feeling there age/mileage... if the temp gauge does not get your attention then i think someone should check the Fans/Fans relay/fuse/connections...and of course make sure your on time with your cooling system needs, coolant/radiator/temo sensor/thermostat/and pump.
best...wihes

I would be concerned, take it to a garage and get the cooling system flushed, get them to check the radiator is not blocked, also get them to check the thermostat and make sure you have good water flow indicating the condition of the water pump.

Check for the fan blades hitting on any part of the shroud. If not, perhaps the fan bearings are shot (prematurely, IMHO).
Its normal for it to run after the car has been turned off.

IT IS 6 YEARS OLD WITH 60,000 MILES ON IT AND IT RUNS A LOT AND IT IS CHEAPER TO REPLACE THE COOLING FAN NOW THEN REPLACE THE ENGINE LATER.
