We had an acrylic bath tub/shower combo installed last summer. The installer used ordinary hole saws when cutting the holes for the taps, etc. The most difficult part of owning an acrylic tub is finding a "safe for acrylic" cleaning solution. The tub came with a list of "approved" cleaners, but none of the exact recommendations can be found.

a hole saw is the answer but if you really want to avoid chipping use the tape but after you drill the pilot hole with the center bit, cut into the tube with the hole saw about half way then drill the rest from the other side, this will reduce the amount of "blowout " that you will get and cut a nice clean hole.

You can buy a hole saw for this it is a circular saw that attaches to an electric drill. They come in different sizes, 15mm, 22mm, 38mm, 42mm etc. They are cheap to buy and usually come in a "kit Form". They have a pilot drill fitted to the centre of the saw.

A hole saw attachment for a drill works well. I use those on fiberglass tubs.
