god, country, family...in that order...is what makes a conservative...and the resistance to change for change's sake. there must be a demonstrated need for change in some institution or law and that change must be thoroughly examined for possible negative consequences. take the gay marriage issue for example. liberals want to change the meaning of this institution to include same sex so they can pat themselves on the back for being 'inclusive' while conservatives, knowing that marriage between a man and woman only is the backbone of civilization, are wholly resistant to this idea.

At the core of things, conservatives believe that government should not spend money to address problems in society.

They believe that the taxes raised to do this hurt the economy. They believe as a matter of principal that Government is not a proper mechanism to solve social problems. They believe that business should be unfettered by regulation and government interference.

Of course conservatives want these problems to be solved. Their usual position is that most of society's ills are a lack of 'personal responsibility' So rather than have government step in with programs and spending that help people directly they believe that people should help themselves. Many conservatives take this a step further and actually want the government to impose stricter standards on behavior.

Conservatives favor less government, less taxes, more personal freedom, traditional family values. Not all Republicans are conservative.
