AkhenAten means the "horizon" or appearance of the Aten. This was the name taken by the king when he tried to introduce a new religion into Egypt, one which recognised the Sun Disk as the the only god.

In a civilization which had remained almost unchanged for thousands of years, this was blasphemy and an insult to the established order of things on a scale which is impossible to imagine today. Almost overnight, the entire priesthood of Egypt would be put out of work (there were hundreds of thousands of priests, temple dancers and musicians, attendants and so on). Many hundreds of gods and their various aspects would be dishonoured.

No wonder Akhenaten's name and image were defaced and removed from monuments; he was described as "vile" and a "criminal".

Akhenaten invented the idea of one all powerful god.
Before him the Egyptians worshipped many gods and each had its own temples.
His idea was that there was only one god and that was the sun (Aten).
He closed all the other temples and had a city built to worship the new god.
After his death the Egyptians went back to their old ways and destroyed everything connected with him.
But his idea of one god lives on in the Jewish and christian religions.

That Aton was the one and only god. Mankind's first play at monotheism and it failed miserably. Tutankhamen was Akhenaton's son and re-instituted the traditional gods. For that he was praised as one of the greatest pharaohs of all time. King Tut's original name was Tutankhaton.
