Ok what’s done is done, don’t worry.
Read carefully this is something that might help.

When coffee is spilled DO NOT POWER ON THE UNIT to check if it is still working as it might cause more damage.

Remove the battery and hardisk. (There should be some indication on the base of the unit)
Dry up the unit as much as possible.
If the unit is within warrenty there might be still hope.

Bring your unit to a skilled computer tech have to dismantle it to the bone. (Depends on how much coffee is spilled) and clean it with alcohol (watsons or guardian ) using a toothbrush and remove all the stains and smell.
If the smell is still there means there is still coffee.
The smell could sometime be masked by using a little bit of perfume.

You have the option of not sending your BATT and HDD into the service center if the coffee stain on the HDD cannot be removed.

This is to prevent the manufactures from voiding your unit’s warrenty.

Only after clean and making sure that the unit is dry you could try to power it up with out the HDD.

As for the data in the HDD sometimes it could still be recovered by using and external hdd casing.

By the way if your boyfriend really loves you he would forgive you, he might get angry a little bit but he will still forgive you. If not then its time to change a new one (not notebook:)

Odds are that it will not be repairable. Unlike water, coffee is both an acid (which will eat through some of the connectors in the laptop) and is sticky (attracting more dust, etc that can over time ruin the laptop).

You need to open the laptop and turn it upside down so that any liquids still in it will drain out. Put a fan on it to blow air and help dry it. Remove the power cord and battery so it does not accidently get turned on. Let the laptop sit for at least 24 hours before attempting to power it.

Check the web site of the laptops manufacturer for information on how to open the case (or remove the keyboard) so you can get inside and wipe up any leftover liquids or sticky spots.

After the 24 hours, try it again and see if it powers up. If not, you will have to have a pro look at it.

If you didn't take the battery right out of it as soon as you spilled, then you are 95% certain of it being bust. The only way to fix liquid spills is to remove battery, take the whole laptop to bits and dry it properly. This cannot be done by end users at home.
If you take sugar in your coffee then it will be worse than if you don't too believe it or not.
The data will probably not have been lost unless the liquid also got into the hard disk, so you should at least be able to recover the data.
You are probably looking at a very expensive repair though, minimum a new keyboard, probably a new motherboard too.

turn it off, take out the battery and let it sit for a few days...then take it to someone who feels comfortable working on laptops to get it cleaned. If it was off when you spiilled the coffee, you might be ok, but if not you might have killed it.

If you have the cash, I would purchase a new one tomorrow, wrap it with a big red ribbon, with a note in big bold letters.
XX SORRY HONEY...........XX.

Or if he is a laid back type of guy, be honest and tell him, I spilt coffee all over it. What do you suggest, i do to get it fixed. Darling, love of my life, Snooky pooky........xx
Hoping for a happy outcome. :-)

of course - it's fried. blame it on the dog/cat/stupid kid from next door/the wind or tell the truth. :P only way to fix it is buying a new laptop since recovering the data from it is virtually impossible now.

Phone him and say the cat, dog, fish, or the wind blew the coffee cup.

Or just tell the truth.

And cry!

Dry it out in the microwave :) seriously though you might want to run it down to a local computer shop and let an expert take a look.
