Calorie -- the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of 1.0 gram of water by 1.0 Celcius degree.

1 calorie = 4.184 Joules

This is the chemist's calorie. Do not confuse it with the Dietician's calorie, which is a chemist's Kilocalorie (1000 calories).
