When renting an apartment, does the landlord have to check your credit first before you can move in ?

He doesn't have to, but it is in his interests to have tenants who can pay.

They don't "have" to...they want to.
Most landlords do now check credit - especially apartment complexes or people with multiple rental properties.
If you're worried because you have bad credit, you'll probably be limited as to where you can live. Your best bet is a landlord with only one property - they don't usually bother to check as it costs money to check someone's credit.

He doesn't HAVE to do anything. He SHOULD do it for his own protection.
