I started off on a big hill with no one to teach me around. Kept on rolling and had to squat down till I finally reach the bottom of the hill. I then went to my sisters boyfriend car where it was flat surface in the road and rolled around it holding on. I was 8 yrs old.

Don'ty remeber my first time, but I lived on my roller skates. I used to live in San Francisco on a good size hill. And I would try to make it down the block without stopping. First it was gliding in and out of the drive ways, then I progressed to full bore down the hill. I also used to go up the street to the Grammer School school yard which had all blacktop. It was really smooth and also had a bumpy ramp on one side. I could go really fast. I would skate all day and my feet would be all tingly when I took my skates off. The old metal skates with the key that I used to wear around my neck. I loved to skate more than ride my bike. I used to skate all around the neighborhood. I sure do miss doing that now.

Now, that was quite an experience as a beginner. No wonder you haven't forgotten it. I do indeed remember learning how to roller skate & I lost more darn skate keys as a youngster. There went my allowance, many times. My first pair of skates were my sister's hand me downs, but I didn't care. I felt free as a bird, as I learned how to skate. I had many a sore bottom & lots of black & blue spots but I gradually got good enough, & those dwindled in number. I got a brand new pair of roller skates for my birthday one year, (9th or 10th) & I was so excited. The faster I skated, the more the sparks flew. I thought I was hot stuff back then. I soon learned how to skate backwards, & off I went, all around the "big block" as it was called. That's when it was safe for children to do such things & not worry about sexual predators lurking about. I also went to the indoor skating rink alot when in junior high & had so much fun & met some real cute guys there. Thanks for the memories.

sage seeker...Yes, I recall skating trios & the couple's skate. That's when the lights dimmed & made it even nicer.

My first skates were "training" skates...wheels were hard rubber and wouldn't roll very far...it was almost a fast walking motion with a little roll to it.

First real skates when I was about 5 or 6 and had no trouble adjusting.

In my youth and up through my teens, my friends and I used to go to the roller rink every Friday night and skate fr om about 7:00pm to around 10:00pm. One of our parents would drop us off and pick us up. We could rent shoeskates there.

My first skates, the trainers and the street skates were tightened on to the sole of your shoe with clamps and skate keys.....I still have my skate key.....

First pair of shoeskates was a Christmas present the year I turned 15. I wore them out.

Tried roller blading a coupla times but, like ice skating, my ankles just won't hold up under the punishment....plus I'm not crazy about either.

I still rollerskate a coupla times a year with my kids and grandson. We head for the local rink and give it a whirl. I don't do much "fancy" stuff anymore - afraid I'll fall and break something important......HA!!!!

Yep.....got those metal skates with the skate keys. They attached to your shoes. Have to admit I developed a very close relationship with the pavement and my backside. Plus spent alot of time hooking the darn things back on my shoes. Don't know why but never got roller skating down at all. But did great on ice-skates. Go figure?

One song every rink played was "These boots are made for walkin'" LOL

I've always loved roller skating. We went to the roller skating rink from the time I was very small. When I was about 3-4, I remember mom holding my hand as we went around the rink. Our rink was open in the winter and I went nearly every weekend, until I moved away from home.

I remember having to change into hard sole shoes so the big metal skates with that special key (that was soon lost and I had to use a pair of pliers) could be clamped around my shoes.

Leather straps were bucketed around my ankles and off I went.

First I held onto the cyclone fence that ran along the sidewalk. Soon I was bumping along the sidewalk. Back in those days the sidewalks were most made of stones embedded in concrete. How wonderful it was to his a patch of new smooth concrete that had replaced a cracked old section!

I think I was 7.

Thanks for the memories.

No, 'cause I learned when I was about 3. I do remember it was on these skates with metal wheels, so I could go on the road/driveway. I do remember how proud I was of my first "real" skates, looked like sneakers with stripes down the sides, with smooth wheels, sparkly laces and pompoms! It's funny, now I've learned roller blading, I find it difficult to go back to the old type of skates, with 2 wheels in front and back.

I do remember when I learned to roller skate. I loved it and had a special key on a string I wore around my neck so I wouldn't lose it. We used the key to tighten the metal toe grips to keep the skates on the shoes, and they had straps with a buckle to wear around the ankles. The wheels were metal and made a noise when you skated on the sidewalks.
Sometimes if we had a friend who didn't have skates, we would share and each one of us would wear only one skate and use it like the kids of today use a skateboard.

I don't recall outdoor skating, but I believe I went indoor skating about 4 - 5 times. It always scared the heck out of me. One day I was standing outside the railing and someone came by so fast they knocked me down. I ended up bruising my spine on some wrought iron; never put on a pair of skates again.

I was around 7 and really don't remember 'learning' - seems I was born with a pair of metal skates attached to my feet! lol

Will never forget when a nearby auto supply store [Western Auto] opened and they built the first black top parking lot I had ever seen.

We weren't supposed to go up there, but natch, we did and the skating was simply HEAVEN! It had slopes too and was so smooth! GEE I loved to skate!! I even graduated into indoor skating as a teen and dreamed of doing it as a 'star' LOL

Remember skating couples? Then trios? Ah, the good ole days :-)
