It was another age, when you were woken-up gestapo style by these monstrous devices to start a 12 hour shift in the factory.
After running to the end of the garden for a dump, it was on your bike with butty in hand. Anyone remember them?

Yes, my problem was I never could go to sleep with that loud ticking. It was like you were waiting to get blown up!! I hated those things!!

Sure, I remember those loud annoying things. I never really had a hard time getting up. Now, I had a stepson, and you could surround his head with a dozen of the noisiest alarm clocks, pounds on pots and pans over his face, and he'd never move. The only thing that got him up in a hurry was squirting him with cold water; then you had to put up with his rotten mood all day.

Actually I have a one, bought as a backup (too many power cuts where I live). No batteries, no electricity, just have to remember to wind it up and make sure the alarm is NOT set.
The alarm doesn't get used nowadays!! When it was in use, I'd wake up before it went off, thank heaven!

I suppose they must've been designed by somebody who new how important was not to miss your shift, or be late cause the factory's doors would be closed by then. People couldn't afford to have their wages docked in those days.

Worst than that: I had a radio alarm clock that no matter how low I adjusted the volume it would suddenly start at full volume, everytime I woke, felt like I was about to have a heart attack, pretty quickly was confined to the bottom drawer, lol.

Remember them?!?! I still have one. Not an original from the '50's but that style. I find it a very pleasant way to wake up. I have always hated that shrill electronic buzz of a modern alarm clock "wheee wheee wheee wheee" . It scared the bejooblies out of my children when they first heard it. They woke up screaming thinking it was a fire alarm or something.

I used one of those clocks, well same design, during the 1970's - it was the only thing that could wake me up in the morning! Don't remember the rest though, as I was a bit too young!

Aye! T'was the Devil himself, having a good laugh as we writhed and groaned in our warm beds, at the ear piercing clanging of hammers on a supersonic gong, to herald in another happy day.

I detest being startled awake. My alarm has the sound of the ocean or any other nature sound I pick. It is a very nice way to wake up.
