The message of the Book of Numbers is unmistakeably clear. Priests are specifically chosen by God. This has nothing to do with desire or ability. God’s choice alone is determinative. Even among those closest to liturgical service (the Levites), the choice to be a priest is not theirs but the Lord’s. Moreover, the reason there is a priesthood in the first place is that God desires a portion of the people to be in an exclusive relationship with Himself in order to bring salvation to all by offering atonement for sin.
Properly understood, a special priesthood chosen "God knows how by God knows whom" is precisely what we must cherish, honor and support.
If this is in fact the belief, why would God chose some of these sick s.o.b.s to be in such a position of power and trust

Oops I mean choose, but hopefully you're smart enough to get the idea. Let's not get too caught up with proof reading

God may choose priests, but people can choose to do evil, whether to become a priest while unchosen of God, or to molest.
Jesus chose Judas to be a disciple, and knew that Judas had a devil. Judas might have exercised free will not to betray, just as a priest might choose not to molest.
"The True Meaning of Christ's Teaching" and "Christmas and Easter in the Initiatic Tradition," by O. M. Aivanhov, may be helpful, enlightening.
"The Path of Virtue," Jonathan Murro, is also good re the "good priests" vs "bad priests" question. It is well to note that a lesser % of priests molest children than the % of school teachers who molest children.
In any case, there is no injustice in God--and the Bible makes it clear that many sinners are not going scot-free.
cordially,
j.

I always hold biblical quotes from the old testament a little at arm's length, since the new testament changed so much of that with new promises, etc. (non sequitor?)
Anyway, I don't think that God chose these people to be priests. I've heard too often from priests and pastors and various other leaders in church positions that they really weren't all that sure that they were 'called' to that position. It seems that many priests entered seminaries simply because their parents expected it, and some pastors sometimes get some kind of license online (which just somehow doesn't seem right either)... so! I can't agree that God chose all these people, in particular those subsequently charged with molestation.

Even if God chooses some people to be priests, he doesn't hand this list to Cardinals and Popes.
The reality is that there isn't a urine or blood test that tells employers who's a pedophile and who isn't. The Church allows people to be priest who show a commitment to God without the desire to live a normal family life.
It's an unfortunate event that some people who do not desire a wife and children happen to harbor odd tendencies. These tendencies are not always associated with pedophilia. I swear my priest has O.C.D.
Yes it is odd that someone with so much knowledge of God and religion can be a source of wrong, but it obviously isn't impossible.

Boles: apparently you don't understand what happened in the New Testament. The priesthood was abolished by God when the Christ paid for your Salvation.
It is Jesus of Nazareth that is the one and only priest now. He does not do as you claim the priests do. Convoluted reasoning can bring about a lot of ignorance, and when men/women do not follow what is written then things are going to go wrong. Things go wrong when a man/woman calls himself/herself a priest of God.
God chose Jesus the Messiah as His final priest. There were no more after that.
Post Script: Do not presume that you can teach another about something you do not understand. I am a Christian and I've read the Bible four times in study. I know what I'm talking about and it is arrogance for someone who does not understand the Bible to try to teach me about it. The Bible is not a "Robert Jordan" series to be read for amusement and entertainment. It is a book to guide us in our lives and it has to be studied on a daily basis.
To paraphrase C.S. Lewis ...it was written for grown ups if you don't understand it then leave it alone.
That or try Mother Goose and Grimms books of fairy tales.

This question pops all the time ,mainly in R&S.Actually, that is where it should be,not in philosophy. And which Bible do you glue your eyes to, understanding and living every word that is written ? The Jewish Bible, the Catholic Bible, the Protestant Bible, the New World Translation Bible, and the over 50 or more Bibles in English alone, are significantly different from each other You should do some research on the subject first, instead of mouthing off about something you know nothing about.

First off we need to understand that back then the people that God chose were from his chosen people. Then we need to find out who are God's chosen people today. Are they the Jews? No because they did not accept his son and in fact allowed his son to be killed. Next we need to examine what happened after that. Jerusalem was eventually destroyed and all the records with it. Therefore the family line records were eliminated. Like back then the chosen people of today are the ones that do what God, the creator of the universe, wants and know him. Many people claim to know him but in fact do not it can be seen by how they act. As for the priests that molest children, they are not chosen by God. The creator of the universe would never ever in his wildest dreams imagine hurting a child that way. If we are his children could you see him doing something like that to us? No of course not. So we are able to understand that they were not chosen by God. One of the priests job was to explain the truth to the people. The truth being what was God's wants and expectations. It also implies that there are lies out there. So we need to be careful that we examine all that someone tells us against what the bible has to say.

We still have FREE WILL to deal with; that is what makes us human and less than worthy of the forgiveness offered to us by God through Jesus Christ, our Savior. We are not animals, as most researchers would have you believe. We have a feeling heart and a thinking mind, and they sometimes conflict with each other. God doesn't wish you any harm, He just wants you to think for yourself; don't be taken in by the ways of this world. I was upset about the pedophile priests a long time ago; it just seemed no one else was paying attention until it hit the headlines. Judges are also appointed by God and I ran into one giving special treatment and I got thrown in isolation for "Contempt of Court" because I stood up for what I believed in. I survived and consider it a badge of honor for my Lord. That judge will get his due, now or later, I'm not concerned; I did what I thought was right; I spoke up; I am a legend in this town now.

MEN wrote the BIBLE-men also proof it and change their reading of it-chose the books to go in it-change what they determine it means. Priests and other holy people on earth have a talent or a calling toward teaching and toward spirituality-they still LIVE in the physical world-they still are human-and as such can be born with physical defects rthat affect their bodies-like cravings and mental defects-as I consider such things to be. Just because you want to play ball and love to play ball-doesn't mean you are a baseball player-get the drift. To assume these "people" are in league with the thousands who have given their lives and souls and time to their religions and to humanity is just stupid.

I haven't red the book but God give us all opportunities and what we make of it is our own choice. God wants what is best for us and I think these people misused the opportunity God gave them. They will one day stand before God and explain, why they did this, but for now we can only pray for them, because they really need help. Unfortunately we live in a broken world and there will always be sin until the day Jesus comes.

You assume that everyone called priest was called by God. It may be that you assume too much, even from the scripture that you quote.
God doesn't call priests to molest children. Many are called priest who have nothing to do with the calling of God.
