With my experiences Ive noticed this trend:

Apple: looks nice, pricing is alright, performace is mediocre for the price. just make sure you like the operating software cause its different from the more widely known windows.

Hp: Lots of models to choose from. Performance and price is better than Apple. Quality is above par. Battery is average. Looks good with smaller 14 and 12 inch models. Cons: there are other better looking notebooks if you are picky.

Compac: a cheaper version of Hp; lower performance too!

Dell: sometimes can be very cheap with the online coupons, but the look is ugly...plus everyone has one, do you want that?

Sony: The best looking laptop. Many sizes and battery life. Lightweight, durable. CONS: high price, but you get name and style; the graphics card isnt the best around so this isnt for gamers. This is my preferred laptop brand.

Others: not worth my time.....but can be good if you want something that isnt really special.

let me think... HP, of course...

students need a practical, efficient and cost-friendly option. functions of a "student" -- not a student who plays online games -- is basic MS Office (or a cheeper version - Linux - of software suite) and internet functionality. My guess is cost is the most important factor, then reliability, then functionality / performance.

I only know this trend: large and desktop-replacements in dorm rooms. I didn't take close look at them.
