advice from a serial insomniac!
lose weight if you need to. try to exercise for at least 20 mins every other day. make sure your bedroom is completely tidy and that there are no strong smells, bright lights, unnecessary sounds etc.
if you are waking up because something is worrying you, keep a notepad next to your bed and write a list of things to do in the morning, then lay back and think about something nice, like winning the lottery!
If all else fails, think about going to a hypnotherapist who can teach you how to relax more completely. believe me, the cost isn't as high as you would think and the benefits are out of this world!

First off go to google and search up "sleep hygiene". You'll find some basic tips that you can try. Things like stress, too much caffeine and cigarettes, not enough exercise can really take a toll on sleep. As we get older we sleep less efficiently so small things can add up quickly. After trying some of the suggestions for a few weeks, if nothing improves then you should talk to your doctor about having a sleep study to make sure you have no physical sleep disorder which is masking itself as insomnia. Insomnia is most often a symptom of something else wrong, just as pain and fever are symptoms. If you have a sleep study and nothing is wrong then you can concentrate on correcting what are most likely some bad habits you have developed. Sleeping pills are ok for a very short term to give you some temporary relief. You should not use them for longer than three weeks and be prepared for the rebound insomnia that is going to happen after using them. Insomnia can be treated but you have to be persistant.

pull an alnighter 2 times a week until your body can't take it no more. You will sleep when your body is tired. Not mentally tired which you seem to be, but getting physically tired is why you body shuts down and rest. It's only natural. When you can learn to activate the chemicals in the brain that induce sleep, you have it made.
