Am considering joining a whalewatch tour. Is there good chance to see them in mid-March ? Am also concerned about the sea condition. Will the sea be rough ? I understand that all cannot be said for sure but I just want to have a rough idea. Thanks !

Whale watching is in Kaikoura. http://www.kaikoura.co.nz
Take a look at the tour operator pages for more info

You can always see them from the air if you are not too keen on the ocean. Should be fine at that time of the year though.
