Good question.

India needs an important 'true & real' all-rounder. Irfan Pathan fits the slot but his batting is not that boastful. Praveen too can fit the slot.
Praveen is an impotrant bowler to open bowling attack. Sreesanth was doing it in the last tour but proved too expensive (giving 6.00+ Economy every time). RP Singh is also another contender but he & Irfan Pathan bowl good towards the end of PP (13-20 overs) or even when there is no PP. (20-30 or 40-50)

P Kumar is an imp lad in the middle-order. It is better to play an all-rounder instead of a bowler as he has better and much faster ways of making runs.

i think India is trying too much at the moment... they are bringing in many a players into the side for each and every tour and if they are not performing then they are dropped for the next immediate tour... with this type of selection policy we cannot be able to assess the true potential of the individual and so if he disappoints and is taken out of the next tour, the media puts up a hype on it and drags that player to the floor, stamps him and thus he will never be picked in the near future... raina and karthick were 2 young cricketers and were willing to perform for the team in the highest level. but due top smoe failures they are not picked even though they put up a brave show in the challenger trophy. with an inclusion of a single new player u cannot win a series. and cricket is an collective effort. thus those picked should be given a long run... and should be assessed over a period fo time. and thios is the case for dravid too... so we are not sure where India is going...

We can pick up a clue from the australians who have a side with majority of the players over 30 yrs of age and still they are in the team... this is bcoz they are given chances in the long run and they prove themselves... besides they are able to get the exposure required and thus they are able to adapt to the conditions and win the game... so the selectors have to think a lot...

No doubt That Raina & Karthick are good batsmen as well as excellent fielders. But what India needs is a true all-rounder. Praveen Kumar is a genuine fast bowler and very dashing batsman which will enable capatain to go in with only five specialist batsmen instead of six. this will also provide flexibility in bowling attack.

Praveen Kumar has been selected as an allrounder, whereas Raina and Dinesh Karthik are not allrounders.

Yes,if successful he will be a valuable bowler who can also get some quick runs. This place cannot be taken by Raina and Karthik who are batsmen.

There is no problem in letting him have a look in...we need to see some new faces and soon. The batting looks ok...so Praveen makes an obvious choice.
