What should one major in while in college as an undergraduate? I've heard that one can major in just about anything because medical schools are looking for well-rounded individuals. The person I am asking for has 8 years of experience as a Nuclear Electrician in the Navy and is majoring in Business Administration w/ a concentration in accounting. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

A body of classes in pre-med is required to enter a medical school. "Well-rounded" means any number of science majors such as chemistry (the most useful), biology, and microbiology. Usually if someone doesn't have the required science courses in undergraduate, they just take the pre-med courses afterward.

Then the MCAT (the medical admissions test) is very rigorous and requires an understanding of science, especially chemistry and biology.

Then there are four years of medical school, during which you do NOT get the summers off! It's 11 months a year for four years straight. The day you graduate you can call yourself a doctor.

After that is an intern year (during which you take more tests to enable you to continue practicing medicine) and then you begin a residency in pediatrics (2-4 years, usually at a hospital).

THEN you can go out and be a pediatrician on your own. Many doctors practice in hospitals or groups because of the high price of insurance and the long hours.

Your friend might want to consider getting a masters degree in public health and being a hospital administrator, as the business degree would be very helpful there. BUT, people do the pre-med after their BA all the time and get through medical school.

The US needs more pediatricians, so good for your friend!

There are medical schools which have a 4 year post-grad programme, meaning you've already done an undergrad bachelors in any field. That is in Australia, that I know of. Then you'd have to do around 4 years in paediatrics. This should get you to consultant level, or at the very least, senior registrar. Nowadays, even paediatrics has subspecialties, so it really depends how far up the ladder you want to go.

You can major in just about anything. as long as you have the pre-med requirements fufilled. I know a doctor with a degree in literature and he went to med school.
