I like short stories too. Do you know the series Best American Short Stories? Or the O'Henry Awards? Great ways to learn of short story writers I would not otherwise have heard of.
Flannery O'Connor is one of my favorite short story writers. Her works are humorous and always have some kind of an underlying religious motif. Sometimes it's a very strange religious motif, but it is there.
Sherman Alexie has been writing some very good stories lately.

Jack London wrote some great short stories. So did John Updike, Bernard Malamud, James Thurber and Dorothy Parker, also Italo Calvino, D.H. Lawrence, Katherine Anne Porter, Flannery O'Conner... many of the people known principally for longer work wrote short masterpieces as well; and we never forget those who wrote for magazines-- they came out with some great stuff too!

A lot of the short stories we call masterpieces are in collections now, to be found under many names but all with "short story" there somewhere... if there are any reading this who would like a collection, ask at your favorite bookstore and they will be waiting for you to take them home.

Short stories are treasures that can be read over and over, each time with a slightly different slant that gives new meaning, like a diamond with many facets. Let 'em shine!

Jeffrey Deaver's Twisted is a pretty good collection of short stories. You might want to try Roald Dahl as well.
