This is an interesting question, I must say. I have never before stopped to ask myself "Why?". So I did some research on the Net. What I found is not much but still, helps...

Halloween is on October 31st, the last day of the Celtic calendar. It was originally a pagan holiday, honouring the dead. Halloween was referred to as All Hallows Eve and dates back to over 2000 years ago. It is celebrated by adults and children all over the 'Western" world. But has carried on its popularity to other countries, thanks to (again) 'Western' movies.

Halloween culture can be traced back to the Druids, a Celtic culture in Ireland, Britain and Northern Europe. Roots lay in the feast of Samhain, which was annually on October 31st to Honor the dead.

The Celts believed the souls of the dead roamed the streets and villages at night. Since not all spirits were thought to be friendly, gifts and treats were left out to pacify the evil and ensure next years crops would be plentiful. This custom evolved into trick-or-treating.

Now, why the words "trick or treat' is used is not explained in this website.
So, prob we can keep digging... : - )

It's stupid to ask a question without making the slightest effort to find out for yourself. Hope you got toilet paper, eggs and soap all this year.

It's not stupid. It's tradition. Is it better to ring someones doorbell and stand there with a stupid look on your face holding our your hands? I had a couple of those today, and believe me, it wasn't cute.
