I have a 2003 Yamaha R1 and am wondering if it is common for them to take 3 or 4 goes to start? It doesn't seam to be labouring like it would be with a flat battery and it runs fine when it starts. The local bike shop says that it isn't a problem but I am curious as it sems odd that a fuel injected bike would do that. Any ideas?

on a cold day, this is normal. if you dont use the bike that often its even more probable. new plugs an help starting, and freshen up the engine up a bit, but if you have done this recently it shouldnt be so vital on a 4stroke.
and if your storing your bike outside, make sure you cover it up. keep the damp off it, saves rust and electrics.
hops this helps

Check/change the spark plugs.
Sportbikes, especially fuel injected, don't like to start with semi fouled plugs.
