what is the difference between $_SESSION['member_name']='name'; and session_register('$member_name');

both works the same way
session_register() should not be used as it is deprecated.

use $_SESSION['member_name']=$name;

Shiva said it, $_SESSION works better if available, PHP 4 and onward, while session_register is for older PHP and might not work in newer setup.
