They go to hollow logs, trees, or other suitable cavities.
Contrary to popular belief, however, they cannot hang upside down from trees by their tails. They do have a prehensile tail, but they use it for carrying leaves to their nest.

Opossums are the only marsupial in the North America. During the day they sleep in hollow logs and abandoned fox dens, etc. Since they are nocturnal, (active during the night and sleeping at night) , they are seldom seen during the day. They are omnivorous scavengers, eating almost anything they find.
They are actually cute creatures, my friend found one dead on the road and the babies had left the pouch and were wandering about the mother on the road. He rescued them and kept one and gave the rest to a vet that raised them. I went over to his house and the opossom was not at all what I had been lead to think they were like. It was curious and friendly. He had been conditioned to obey volentarily to come when called and would eat from my hand. It had a cold nose and I finally got used to the naked tail. His name is Charley and he knew his name. Now he is full grown and a bit unruly but still he comes when called and eats from the hand. He never has bitten anyone and he sleeps in my friend's wife's lap sometimes. Very sofy and likes to be rubbed behind the ears. I like the creature.
If you are thinking about having one as a pet you should be aware that it takes lots of patients and care. They are naturally shy and nothing like a cat or dog. They can be aggressive if not handled with lots of love and understanding. You should read up on their needs and behaviors along with their dietary needs. They can be passively conditioned to obey commands as mentioned above.

The little blighters sometimes shelter in my roof cavity during the day, then wake me up at midnight running around the rafters before going out in search of food. People often put little wooden boxes in trees for the possums to shelter in (especially if urban sprawl has resulted in a loss of habitat, and there aren't many hollows for them to hide in).

I saw a opossum climb up a hickory tree and go into what I thought was a squirrel nest. I guess some squirrel nests are actually opossum houses. I did not see the opossum for the rest of the day. I thought it was very odd for the opossum to be out during the day.

They have nests and sleep in trees. I have a ring tail that lives in my garden arch. Also have two HUGE possums that live out high in the trees. 3 dogs and no issues...All good...

There is one that climbs down into a narrow portion between two fences built by my neighbors right under my back window. There aren't too many hollow trees or caves in the city so they find piles of wood or other such things to hide under around here.

I've found they can be nocturnal and roam at night. I've seen them in trees. I've seen them in the rafters of barns and out buildings. I've found them in burrows. I've found some reside in sewers. I guess there is no easy answer to this question. The one you are after will have to be watched and you will either have to invest the time to track its behavior, or trap it.
