Do you know the stock you want to buy or do you need advice? I would recommend Schwab. They are the best for unseasoned investors and will make it as simple for you as possible. They are also very reasonable on the fees. Don't fall for the "transactions for only $7" line as those rates are for people who trade a minimum amount monthly. For someone only looking to buy stock this one time, or to make very few trades overall, then your best bets are Schwab or (if you are experienced and just want a good rate) Scottrade.

There are 3 brokers that I think offer the best value:
Zecco offers you 10 commission free trades a month if you maintain a balance of $2500. Otherwise it is $4.50 a trade.
TradeKing has won many awards for its service and offers $4.95 trades.
Scottrade is the best of all the heavily advertised online brokers at $7.00 a trade.
If you are just planning on buying and holding certain stocks for a long time any of these brokers are fine.

I personally trade through Etrade, which offers 100 free trades when opening a new account. Although read the fine print. I'm not sure on all the details but you do need a minimum of $1000 opening balance for cash accounts and need to maintain an overall value of $1000 in your account for 6 months, otherwise they may charge you for your "free trades".
good luck with your investments!

Speak the truth is right. Open an account at a discount online broker. You'll pay $7 or so to buy them and they'll sit in your account.
When checking them out, look for terms about minimum balances, low balance fees, etc. I believe Scottrade doesn't have any.

E trade, Ameritrade, Scottrade are useful websites. Most of them allow you to buy 100 free shares per year. Every other share buy or sell cost around $5.99 to $9.99 so it can get expensive.

you are able to't "purchase a million,000 shares of inventory X without everyone else paying for or merchandising any shares of inventory X", which you would be able to purchase them, somebody else has to sell them....you won't be in a place to conjure shares out of skinny air!
