I am in a postition where i can no longer smoke marijuana. I have used it in the past for anxiety and depression in small doses and have never had to go to the doctor for any other perscription. Any advise? Thanks.

There are many good antidepressants (SSRIs, MAOIs, tricyclics - these are all different classes of antidepressants and there are various antidepressants under each class) and anti-anxiety drugs (benzodiazepines such as valium, klonopin, ativan and xanax) or buspar (a non-addictive anti-anxiety drug that is not a benzodiazipine). And certain anti-depressants also decrease anxiety.

However, since you put this question under alternative medicine I'm going to assume you are looking for something more "natural" than what I've described above. Most good psychiatrists will tell you that exercise is probably the best antidepressant and anti-anxiety agent that exists. Another activity that works to counter both depression and anxiety is meditation. One doctor recommended mindfulness meditation to me to relieve stress and to help decrease the negative thoughts that were constantly running through my mind. These thoughts only served to increase my depression. Mindfulness simply means being in the moment. A good book that contains meditation exercises and describes why "being in the moment" can help relieve anxiety and depression is "Full Catastrophe Living" by Jon Kabbat Zinn.

Another option is taking omega-3 fatty acids. They are supposed to decrease depression and improve the health of your heart and other organs. You can buy them in the health food store in either liquid or pill form. Or, you can get it by eating a lot of fatty type fish such as salmon. There is some evidence that Sam-E (which can also be obtained at health food stores) works as an antidepressant. But, I would check with a doctor before you start using Sam-E to get the correct dosage and make sure it won't interact with other foods you are eating or drugs you are taking.

Good Luck!

from my experience, the best is not drugs, but vitamins and a healthy diet and excercise. also taking some time out every day to do something enjoyable for yourself that will make you happier. the depression drugs have all kinds of crazy side effects and not even worth it. watching funny movies or comedy on TV always seems to work too. and having some good friends to talk to is more effective than the antidepressants and all that stuff - the only thing the drugs are effective at is making the pharmaceutical companies rich.

St. John's Wort works great...in about 40% of the population. What I would recommend is 5-HTP...it's a precursor to serotonin, the "Feel good" brain chemical...Ever try tryptophan before it was taken off the shelves long ago? really relaxes, calms, relaxes you....it's the ingredient in warm milk and Turkey....it got a bad rap because ONE company had a nasty process of extracting it, and one batch got by two levels of Quality Control...leaving deadly chemicals....imho, I think the big drug companies had something to do with that, as it was killing their businesses...it's back now, same great quality available from quality sources, but the prices are higher....5-HTP, imo, is better, as it is one step closer to serotonin...good luck.

look into 5 HTP natural tryptophan - I've read about it on Mercola.com - it's supposed to help other symptoms too. St. John's Wort might also be of help too - it's probably best to do research on it before taking herbs/supplements to be sure it's safely taken. Good luck!!!

St. John's Wort........a non-prescription alternative easily found at Wal-Marts or your grocery store. If this does not work for you, I suggest you visit your doctor. There are many meds that will treat depression...sometimes you have to try several before you find the best one for you.......some are:
Paccil,Wellbuton,Zoloft, Valium etc. Good Luck to you.
