I'm 25 and I've always had irregular periods. I never know when its coming. My periods are really heavy with severe cramps. I have PMS also. For those people who say PMS does not exist, they have not met me. I get extremely emotional right before my period. I can burst out crying or I can get extremely angry. Sometimes I get severely depressed. But I have no reason to be depressed! I get food cravings and I get really tired. While I'm on my period I also get diahrrea and neausea. I went to the gyno for the first time this summer to see if there is something wrong w/ me and the Nurse Practicitioner told me to take birth control pills. I refused to take it since my mother was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. But this month I had my period the 2nd week of Oct and now I have my period again. It started 2 days ago and its heavy like a normal period and I feel absolutely horrible. Should I be freaking out?

Birth control pills have been linked to breast cancer. Also, long use of birth control pills can increase chances of getting blood clots. It just has too many side effects that I don't know if it is worth taking.

I feel your pain...I have had most of the same problems that you are describing. My period stopped completely for a year and a half when I was 18...I was bulimic though. When I started getting them again they were really heavy and I have had more than 2 periods in one month. Especially when I was only having a period every other month.

Is this something that has happened before to you...2 periods in one month? If that is the case, you should talk to your ob/gyn. There are a lot of reasons why this could be happening. It could be nothing...but it would not be a wasted appointment if it gave you peace of mind.

I understand your hesitance to take birth control pills. The link between estrogen replacement therapy and breast cancer has been proven. Has anyone talked to you about a lower-estrogen pill? They prescribe pills because they regulate your period and help with the symptoms. They even have birth control pills that specifically address the emotional side effects that you are experiencing.

Don't freak out...make an appointment with your ob/gyn.

No..I suggest you to take your birth control pills, they help regulate the period cycles better and have less flow each month. Just give it a month or two and see what happens..and by the way, why wouldn't you take it just because your mom has breast cancer?

I don't get why you are refusing to take birth control pills.. because your mother has breast cancer???? Doesn't make sense to me. Sorry to hear about your mom.

BCP's will help with your cramps and irregular periods.

Don't freak out. This will all be alleviated with BCP's though.

I think you should take your doctors advice about taking birthcontrol it will help even out your irregular periods...in some women it can actually stop your cycle ( with out causing damage ) all together....

I would at least give it a shot, that or maybe have your Thyroid checked....
