Gene Hackman was interviewed about the making of the French Connection. He said that the real Popeye Doyle came in to oversee it and was critical of the dialogue, and that a real detective didn't interview suspects as per the film. He went on the give an example of a rape suspect who would not admit his guilt (before DNA etc). So they re-interviewed the woman who eventually told them that after being raped the offender just sat on the bed and picked his feet.
When the offender was re-interviewed he admitted his guilt because of the detail and accuracy.
The film about the making of the French Connection was almost as good as the film itself. (Has anybody still got a copy please?)
