I have used Lakota liquid with an applicator roll (which I prefer), and it seems to work like magic. It has no nasty scent except a slightly GREEN smell, and you put it on and are waiting for it to work.....so you say, okay, what the heck, and go about your regular routine, when suddenly you realize that HEY that pain in my knee IS GONE! And I mean totally. And it has been gone for an hour or more, only you never noticed.
Weird, but good.

I can't use anything with a smell because of my allergies, so I use Aspercreme-it's basically odorless, we have the creme form right now. I actually like the lotion better, but we couldn't find it this time. I get a lot of pain in my shoulders and neck and it really helps me. My husband uses it on his lower back pain.
This is a good question, I'm sure several of us have aches and pains and it's nice to see what works for others.
EDIT: It works on the same basis as those without the 'burning' or smell.

No, I use herbal formulae that have been in use for thousands of years, with very little changes. Like instead of Ben-gay or any of those products you can make your own. Just go to a good herb store and get some herbal cayenne powder (chili), then go to the store and get some good extra virgin olive oil. Mix the powder in the olive oil until you have a mash, not quite a paste, but looser. Rub on any afflicted areas, like arthritic joints. Do this every night for 6 months and your arthritis will disappear, because the heat brings the blood to the surface and breaks up the calcium deposits that cause arthritis. Doctor's don't want you to know this, so they tell you it in incurable to sell you more drugs or offer surgeries that don't do anything but screw up your system more in order to steal your money. Nothing more, nothing less. Herbs, always work, even on skeptics.

Well Melissa - I have an electric heating pad for my arthritic hip. Yes it works. But have not tried any of the remedies you mentioned. I tend to stick with what I know! And for me that is Tylenol Extra strength Arthritis formula. My heating pad and two of those little suckers and I'm almost limber enough to ride a horse! I also take prescription meds for fibromyalgia -- - - so because of this situation, there is a lot of things that I just have to ignore! Hey Ho! That's life in the "GOLDEN YEARS"! Ha! Ha! One thing that I have tried and that I WOULD NOT be without is Zicam. For colds - it stops them almost instantly. Get it at WalMart or similar stores! Stay healthy! CJ

No ointments. I have slight arthritis in hands, wrists, elbows, knees and hips. When anything flares up, a coupla ibuprofen takes care of it.
Ointments are messy and too expensive - plus they aren't really that effective. Pain is caused by inflamation and ointments don't address that problem.
If my hands get really achy, I take a coupla ibuprofen and I might soak them in hot water or put a hot water bottle over them for a while...but, I don't stress over it.
I know people who can't walk and are confined to a wheelchair or a walker.....I'm very lucky.

It is so interesting to find others remedies. Good quetion! I'm going to try Wally and Iritadragons solutions.
I've always been a Ben Gay fan but the pepper makes sense. I know you can gargle with warm water and red pepper and it draws the blood to the sore throat and helps so much.
Now if I can just find the Lakota lotion.

I totally agree with Wally about the pepper. I use Salon Pas for my back which is made of capsicum, which is the "heat" of the peppers. It really takes out the deep soreness in my back. I have arthritis and it works so well.
I also use, when I can afford it, "Blue Stuff" on my feet, for the pain of Plantar Faciitis. It's herbal and all natural, and believe me, it really stops the pain in less than 5 minutes. Loaded with MSM and Emu Oil. Great stuff!

I bought a small hot tub for two and put it in the corner of my garage. Since I have been sitting in it regularly, my aches and pains have improved, so I have not had to use any ointments.

I've been using a product called BioFreeze for about 2 years now....pretty good stuff. I get it from my chiropractor, and it comes in both gel and roll on formula. Works better for me than the drug store products.
And I'm still with ya....just been catching a little TV and answering e-mails!

Good for you. Keep asking.
Sorry I can't contribute; I am a pharmacophile. No, it's not nasty, just means I rely on proven drugs and the benefits of cooling and heat.
Jury's still out on herbal remedies.
