RE:
Jeep cherokee sport cracked head, sell or fix?
I got a 2000 sport with a cracked head, no doubt about it, 2 different mechanics same diagnosis. The beast has a 130k on it, a couple dings and some chipped pant, if it were running good I could probably get 3500-4000 for it.
The first mech said replace the whole engine with a used one he could...

I'm a service manager at a auto shop. If a customer came in with your problem I would recommend putting a used motor in it as well, for the same reasons the first shop suggested. When I have customers ask my opinion on if they should get rid of the vehicle I ask them to weigh out the their predicament. Can they afford the one time cost of the repair or can they afford a long term payment for a new vehicle. The repair might be $2000, but you pay it and its done. A car payment can be what? $300-$600 a month. At $300 a month in7 months you payed what you would have payed for the repair, that's not taking a down payment in consideration. But after that 7 months you still have to pay That $300 a month. If it seems to fit in your budget then get a new car. if you don"t think you can afford a new car you probably can"t. It"s up to you.
I would also check with other shops to get prices on installing a used motor, though cheapest might not be the best. check to see how long the shop has been open, call the BBB to find out about complaints, and I personally would make sure the techs are ASE certified. Most shops have their certificates displayed where customers can see them.
Hope this helps with your decision

A 2000 model with only 130,000 miles? I would go for the used head, have it pressure tested, new valve seals installed on it, and have it installed. Then enjoy your Cherokee for a few more years, since money does seem to be an issue here. Compare the price of this repair to the price of a new Cherokee, and the choice is an obvious one.

With over 35 years experience in the field, my best advice to you would be to sell it as is and take what you can get for it. It is almost 8 years old, has over 100k and (sorry to say) it is a Jeep Cherokee. They are well known for shabby workmanship and many problems. Good luck!!

Contrary to what someone else said about the Jeep Cherokee, I have 260k on mine, had it rebuilt about 30k miles ago, and intend to put yet another 230k on it.
Price out a complete rebuild, and compare the prices between that and your alternatives.

If you had the skills to do it then you wouldnt be asking this question dude, come on. You dont have the skills or the know how to do this hence you asking this. If you can get an engine done for under two g's with a warranty I would do that.

if its in pretty good shape and everything had been working good on it i think id fix it,you can find really good engines for those all over the place, and that would be better than buying another vehicle right now,the present shape of it would determine whether or not it got fixed,if you think its worth fixing, fix it,at least you,ll know what you have ,if you buy another one you may have to start all over again with it,labor on changing those usually is around 500 is a good price for doing that one, good luck on it.
