when you attached a baseball card & a clothespin to the spokes of your bike? Neat sound wasn't it?

Dan Bueno...Ah, yes, the balloon trik. I did that too, but preferred the "clickity click,"

Yepper, it did !! I am from Chicago and hated the Yankees, So used to put the Yankee baseball cards on my bike. There was probably more than one Mickey Mantle rookie card that I ruined. Oh well, easy come....

Sometimes I'd put a balloon on my bike the same way. It made more of a motor sound but didn't last too long.

Thanks for the memories.

Who said "trik"?

Years ago the hub and cassette assembly (or freewheel) used to be separate. The cassette is the component the gears or 'sprockets' sit on. Inside the cassette assembly are housed the bearings and pals that allow the bicycle to be driven forward when pedaling and to 'coast' when not (thus the name freewheel). The clicking or ratcheting sound you hear are the pals clacking against the latches while coasting. The whole cassette and assembly would then be threaded onto the hub. Now days the internal cassette 'guts' (bearings and pals) are incorporated into the hub assembly. That is why you can still hear to hub clicking even though there may not be any gears on it.

I didn't do that, but the boys in my neighborhood did. My second bike was a hoot! I hated it, but my parents thought it was 'cute'. It was a Schwinn Donald Duck bike painted yellow and blue and it had a quacking horn and a Duck face on the front of the mid bar between the handle bars. The eyes lit up when you turned the lights on...lol

I never did that but I remember the sound from but brother's bike. I thought he used a Popsicle stick or a balloon.

We all did that. I suppose we lost some good baseball cards that way. Oh well, it's been too many years ago to worry about that now. It was a neat sound.

Sure did - was living in London then - and I used playing cards - used to tape 3 together and place in back wheel spokes! It just felt as tho' I was travelling a 100 MPH - at least it sounded that way to me. What fun - Thanks for the memories. CJ

No, I didn't make the cards.I used to love the tick tick noise the bikes gear box made when I was cycling along. I think it was the wee Steele ball things tumbling inside.

yes, we took old cards and clipped them on with clothes pins. Those were the days! We would ride our bikes until dark if our parents let us. No computers or video games for us.

We put a whole bunch of them on there and thought we were really neato. That was fun when we all road at the same time.
