It's not illegal, but most universities have strict policies against it. The reason is because there is a power difference between the professor and the student and it puts the professor in a potential conflict of interest situation.

For example, if you were failing, would your professor/ boyfriend be tempted to give you, his girlfriend, a passing grade? That would not be fair to you and to the other students.

There is also a thing called "quid pro quo" sexual harassment, in which he could threaten your grades to try to force you to do something you didn't want to do.

What if you wanted to break up with him, but couldn't because you were afraid that he might flunk you? What if you did break up and then he flunked you, because he was mad at you?

In any case, you would be hurt and he would risk being fired.

Whether or not he does these things, you risk having other people wonder if you passed his course because you knew the material or because you were his girlfriend.

As someone said, you should think twice about dating him.

Dating Your Professor

Are you both 18 or over? If so, it isn't illegal. Now, most colleges have ethics regulations that forbid them from dating their own students. If he/she's in another department and has no power over your grades, it may be a different story. But if your college is anything like mine, the rules don't allow professors and undergraduate students to date, because of the power that professor could hold over the student. Graduate students are also a different story, but generally, it's not a good idea either.

No, it's not illegal, but it could be seen as unprofessional and could risk their job. If you're not a student in this professor's classes and you won't be in the future and perhaps not a student in that professor's department at all, it should be fine. It really depends on the policies that the administration at your university has set up and whether or not you are this professor's student. I should warn you though, most profs. would have absolutely no interest in dating a student and think such student/prof crushes are ridiculously immature.

Not a matter of 'illegal' if the Student is over 18. A matter of professional ethics and dismissal/end of academic career for ANY faculty to date ANY student.

No, but the college will have very strict policies about it, causing the professor to be fired, and you to be expelled from the university. Don't do it, there are too many fish in the sea.

No. If both the student and the teacher are over 18 its not illegal but it is unprofessional and if the professor doesn't have tenre he/she could get fired.

There is no law that says you cannot date a college professor; unless one is under the age of consent. It does pose ethical and moral implications for both parties.

No. The police will not come and get your or him (unless you are like less than 16 or 17 years old). But it is against most college/university policy. It could cost him his job or set you up for a miserable college career. Think twice before proceeding.

No but it's a conflict of interest if you are in their current class.
