They are the water equivalent of wind. They are caused by differences in water temperature (which makes some water denser than other water) causing the water to move in specific paths instead of staying in place.

They happen to bring temperate climate to some regions and they provide a flow of food to some ocean creatures. I don't think that is a purpose since they are just a physical effect with some consequences or benefits.

There are two type of ocean currents ...Shallow ocean current & Deep ocean current.

Without it, climate will come to a standstill. Life in the ocean dies.

Things like that don't have a purpose, they only have effects (and causes). A current isn't sentinent so it can't care what it does, set goals for itself, or change its behavior to fit what it wants to acheive.
