I have an older house and it has a floor furnace and the grate is in the living room in the doorway leading to the dining room. I need some ideas on how to protect my 7 month old from accidently crawing on it. I try to keep my eye on her, but there have been a couple times when I just left the room for a minute and she was rolling towards it. I would like to put some kind of fence around it, but nothing I have found in stores will work, is there anyone with the same problem, who would have some suggestions of what I could do. I thought of just setting stuff around it, but I am afraid of when she starts crawling she will just get around it somehow. HELP!

There are kid gates that fasten into a circle. Stand one of those around the grate as a barrier.

I lived in a house with my son when he was a baby and ran into the same problem. We got a plastic grate cover from Home Depot but since you said that isn't an option try looking for it online. Also, and this will sound mean but it isn't, the grates get hot but not hot enough to burn, it's just mighty unpleasant. Babies are quick learners so leave it uncovered and your kid will learn why not to touch the grate. Yes I know that sounds bad but I am a parent with experience and kids are smarter then we think they are.

try making a kind of raised platform grid over this grate out of wood; dowel rods are sold in hardware stores and even at wal mart, which could be fixed in a crossgrid pattern and make strongly enough to step on, will let the hot air out and yet keep baby's hands and knees away from the hot metal. make it like a box slightly larger than the grate, raised only an inch or two above the floor.

I had one of those and hated the damn thing. Mine was pretty big so I bought two cheap fireplace covers, the kind made of wire mesh and put the bottom ends togather with wire ties. It made a kind of awkward thing to walk around, but the kids never burned themselves. These things are free standing, the edges are against the fireplace and the mesh comes out in a curve from the wall. No matter what you do, you will be walking around it until the child gets big enough to understand the danger.

She will learn not to touch it once she realises that it is hot. Then she will be able to see that the oven, and the back of the fridge, and other appliances are not good to touch because they are hot.

call a service guy and have them change out the hi temp switches for 120 degree ones....this will help.

i know it sounds bad......but let her crawl on it once....and yank her off quickly. make a big fuss, and scare her real bad. she wont go near it again
