Depends on if you are building a kit to travel with or to keep at home for more moderate projects. For the road consider what might go wrong and then what you might need to fix it to get you from point A - B. As example there are portable plug kits and compressors to fix a flat out in the middle of nowhere. Now I would not suggest plugging a tire, but if you are stranded it may be your only chance of getting to civilization. But a basic screwdriver set (phillips, allen, torx), wrench set, cable ties, and again depending on your type of riding (cross country in town) you might need to add some things.
But being on 2 wheels, do not try work on something that you are not 100% confident you can do properly. I have seen my share of bikes in accidents due to improper installation of parts. I personally feel I can do a moderate amount of work on my bike, but I leave some things (even some I can do) to the professionals!
Think of a Motorcycle like an Airplane instead of a Car. Get a flat tire on a car it usually results in an inconvenience... but that same flat on a motorcycle or a plane can result in far worse.

Combination wrenches - 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17mm.
Screwdrivers - flat and phillips (a 4-way is good for this)
Spark plug socket (check your size - I don't remember)
Gas pliers
Needlenose pliers
A few wire ties
Electrical tape
This should take care of most of your needs. The needlenose were never standard equipment, but boy are they handy.
Also, you would want a spanner or pin to adjust your shocks.
Depends on which style you have.

It's a compact tool kit,
a handle, and some things you can plug into it - screwdrivers of various sizes
Allen (hex) wrenches in all the sizes of things on your bike
A small adjustable wrench
A few open-end wrenches in sizes to fit most of the nuts on your bike
A small pair of pliers
Spark plug tool
I think that's about it for mine. The hex wrenches are pretty useful. Everything else, I use something else out of my toolbox instead.
=
One thing that my motorcycle doesn't have is a wire thingie so I could jumpstart the cycle more easily.

That depends mostly on what you feel qualified to work on.
MOST bikes come with a very basic factory toolkit. These are usually available separately from the dealer if you don't have one and want to buy one, and are sized to fit in a holder, usually under the seat.
I know some who consider their cellphone all the tool kit they need; and others who want enough to almost rebuild it by the side of the road.

Get a 150 piece socket & wrench set from Sears, and a set of screwdrivers. Go back to Sears or Home Depot for anything else you find you need along the way.
Get a Clymer or Hayes shop manual too.

depends on what you ride. and how old and what state of repair it is in . I ride an old panhead chopper but I dont go far just into barhopping and light to light drags so I dont carry much. It allways makes it home and gets fixed there. Since your riding jap stuff You should carry a 10 millemeter wrench as well as a 12. a vicegrip and flat and phillips screwdriver.as well as allen wrenches. electrical tape just in case and thats about all. bikes like yours are very trouble free.
