our condo had a leak (from the rain) and my neighbors foor and carpet got wet. now we were wondering if there is mildew growing under the carpet, and how would we know? do we have to pull it up to find out? should it be replaced? or much simpler is there a product that totally removes any unseen mildew? its a small codo and all the owners are single women so we need some advice... thanks alot

Um, bleach around carpets not so safe for keeping the same color. You need to shock the mold by changing the pH of its environment. That is usually done with bleach, but can also be done with vinegar. Mix a half and half concentration and spot check the carpet for color fastness. ( make sure the color stays in the carpet by dropping some on a hidden spot and blotting with a clean white towel. No color transfer means its safe to proceed.) lightly spray the area and then vacuum it up with a steam cleaner or wet dry vaccumm. You can buy a nice small one at Home depot for around $20.00 the model is "Stinger" yellow and black with red accents. make sure you take the bag off for liquids.

Have the carpets steam cleaned. The heat should kill any mildew there.
