i found this ice crystals look-a-like behind my furnace and water heater heater. i removed them to see and they were dry and about 1 foot from the floor. the house is really old, water problems in the basement. i have been cleaning it out to find where the water is coming in at. i have seveal places marked. so, also what is the best thing to put on the walls to stop the leaking in ? thanks

It might be effloresence; water slowly seeping through the porosity of the cement carries minerals with it; the water evaporates and leaves the minerals behind (looks sort of like frost, whitish crystals).

They sell a variety of paints and putties to try and seal basement walls from water; IMO none of them work. If it is just slight seepage, I wouldn't worry about it.

Probably leaking from the water heater or, if you have one, a water softener. Crystalizes because it is probably softened water. Try some Hydraulic cement for the walls, or ask your local hardware store for something similar to stop leaks. If that doesn't stop them, you are going to have to find a professional to dig up your foundation from the outside to fix the problem...... good luck
