"The Only Man I Never Knew" by Reba McEntire - a song about a father that died who was so busy working to make a living to take care of his family he really didn't spend time with them. It's a beautiful song, well sung, but makes me cry every time I hear it because the first time I heard it, I had just left my father at the hospital. He later died of lung cancer. He worked in the coal mines for over 35 years and suffered from black lung disease before succumbing to cancer. He was the hardest working man I've ever known and a great father, but I still wish for more time with him...

"Bittersweet Symphony" by the Verve Pipe. Maudlin? Maybe a tad. But it just seems to sum up something about my life that I'm usually not able to express, as a guy, without sounding pitiful, which is why I won't spell it all out here... just hear the song. It makes be think of what could be but won't, more than what could have been, and that may be worse.
And did you see the video? Very poignant. The dude walking down the sidewalk (Richard Ashcroft) just decides he's going to walk his own, straight path, and everyone expects him to be the one to move out of their way but he doesn't, and they bash into him and look at him in shock and casting blame and he doesn't care a lick anymore.

Don't Cry by Seal. I'm not sure why. It's a song that always seemed to be playing during family car trips. We moved so often. I'd wake up on a trip during the night going through Arizona and I'd hear his voice and it makes me sad to remember it now. But I adore the song. I got the CD ten years later just because of those nights.

Its not a song, but its a piece by Thomas Newman called Any Other Name (The piece played in American Beauty when they are watching the plastic bag)
I adore it, but theres somthing about it that, to me, symbolises memories, things lost and forgotten, the 'What If?' problem. How i could have made things better, and it makes me realise how much of a mess my life is.

Demons Away by Matt Skiba. Its a beautiful song. This guy I had a thing for got me into it, and things didn't work out with him. But now whenever I listen to it, I still think of him. And depending on your interpretation of the lyrics, it can very well describe why things didn't work out.

Don't Cry For Me Argentina .Sarah Brightman,. vocals.(Music: Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lyrics" Tim Rice.)
Why does it make me sad.? It's hard to say .The lyrics are very strong and the melody has that sweeping grandeur which just gets me very emotional .You can't explain, you have to listen.

There are a few songs that I like that put me in sad mood, but there is one that I listen to when I am sad. It reminds me that as bad as I may feel things are for me at that moment, things could always be worse. This song always puts things into perspective for me. In my opinion, it may be the saddest song ever written.
