It hurts to sit, but other than that it is not a big deal.
If you brake it, then yes the doctor is going to want to see it.
The isn't any difference in the treatment between a break and a bruise.
The symptoms are the same.

Yes, sometimes they will perform a rectal exam to press up against the coccyx to determine if anything moves out of place, and find out if it is broken. I had numerous CT scans, as well as the rectal when I broke my tail bone. They generally don't do anything but manage your pain if your coccyx is broken. I was given pain medication and was told to take it easy, and I found laying on my side felt better then anything, because laying on my back hurt a bit. It's been a few years and I have no residual pain from my break.
I would think that the pain would probably be about the same for a bruise or a break, but you should really have it looked at by a doctor to ensure that nothing is terribly wrong and to help with the pain.

Yes, the Dr. has to look at your but. She needs to see the surronding tissue to see if there is any bruising or damage to the tissue.
If it is broken depending on the break, normally it will heal on its own.
You can tell the difference between a bruise and a fracture by having an Xray done.

Diagnostic imaging like and x-ray would reveal if there was a fracture or break. You would have to go to the Dr.'s office or hospital to have an x-ray performed.
A bone bruise or contusion, is nagging and uncomfortable especially with sitting and does take some time to fully heal.
If it was broke your body would let you know, it would be unbelievable pain. It is highly unlikely you broke it.

Ouch I bruised mine once and it hurt for over a month. If it is broken it would swell up huge so it's likely just bruised. If you go to the doctor I would hope he'd look at the injury!

Not sure about the difference but i can tell you one thing... it REALLY hurts.. and your no your doctor doesn't look at your butt lol. he basically will press on your tail bone and see your reaction. So annoying though.. couldn't walk properly for like 2 weeks and sitting was a drag too lol.
