license to illegal immigrants?

I live in NY, and think Gov. Spitzer has been doing a good job so far. My immediate reaction was that there had to be more to the idea than simply "giving out driver's licenses to illegal immigrants". You don't have to agree with him, but the man's not stupid... ;-)

... so I decided to do a bit of reading, rather than simply repeating the catch-phrases we are given by the news media.

First; I don't need to look any further than my desk to know that auto insurance costs in NY are very high. I found out though, that there is an unusually high rate of hit-and-run accidents in NY, and that many of them involve unlicensed, uninsured drivers. One purpose of this proposal is to get more people to pay for auto insurance.

Will it invite more people to sneak into NY and take up residence? Here's a quote from Gov. Spitzer: "At the end of the day, we're not talking about bringing more people into this country, we're talking about being practical about the ones who are already here."

Another part of the plan which the news downplays is that applicants would need to provide documents such as passports and birth certificates from their home countries. These documents would be subject to authentication.

Here's a quote from former White House Counterterrorism Czar, Richard Clarke: “From a law enforcement and security perspective, it is far preferable for the state to know who is living in it and driving on its roads, and to have their photograph and their address on file, than to have large numbers of people living in our cities whose identity is totally unknown to the government.”

Other proponents of the plan say it is a way to bring a hidden population into the open and ultimately make the identification system more secure, as well as a way to ensure more drivers are licensed and insured.

To me, the obvious question is: How many immigrants will actually apply for licenses once they realize what is involved?

Do I agree with the plan? Even though I feel I understand it better now, I'm still not sure. I think the goal of documenting, licensing, and insuring drivers is a good one; but I'm just not sure it will work out as intended.

Anyway, I just wanted to add a little depth to the discussion.

peace

.

Well...I think it's a great way to get a persons photo & fingerprints. I doubt the license will just be "given" to anyone. There is a written test that must be passed & hopefully, an actual behind-the-wheel drivers test before the license can be issued. Add the fee & I think it will work for NY as well as it has worked for California. It's better than having a bunch of people on the road with no type of training under their belts. Besides, how else can we start the process of documentation? This way they end up paying the fee for their own background checks & it lessens some of the financial strain that has been over-burdening this nation on a state by state level for the last 10 years.

It's an abomination! I emigrated to this country in 1963 - the exams about the Fed. Govt., the paperwork involved, the difficulty in getting green cards, learning all that American history - well if I can do it so can the illegals. I say, NO EXAMS, NO ENGLISH LESSONS, NO HISTORY LESSONS and all the other stuff one goes through to become a legitimate citizen, EQUALS NO CITIZENSHIP AND NO DRIVERS LICENSES EITHER! It would be a slap in the face to all who came here legally! Shame on you Mr. Spitzer!

I hadb't read about it but I can see this as a way of knowing who is and who is not legal in the country. I am sure it will produce more revenue and also keep tabs on an individual. Here in Chareston, we have many illegal, some have been killed and there is no way to identify them or find where they live.
Hopefully, these people can pass a written and driving test.

Governor Spitzer is way off if he's thinking this isn't going to open the door to just illegal immigrants. Homeland security should be first and forefront...and if anyone can just walk in and get a license without a SS# and proof of residency, so can terrorists. I think it's a screwed-up idea that's going to cause more problems than ever.

I lean towards it being a good idea..#1 they will drive without it..#2 they will have to be insured before they can register a car..it helps the state economy and any one that gets into an accident with them..

They did that here in Utah for some time. Just last year they stopped. I think it's wrong to provide them with a drivers license.

I think that if they do start that program then immigration agents should stand right outside the door and check the status of everyone of them any illegals should be immediately deported.

It has a positive side this way they have insurance. If we fused a licence . most would drive illegal with no insurance. In some areas part of the licence fee goes to an insurance policy
