Choking up on a bat moves your hands closer to the center of gravity of the bat, this gives you better (more precise) control of the other end of the bat. To demonstrate this, find the center of gravity of a bat, where it balances on top of a vertical hand (typically about at the label), it takes a couple of trial balances to find it. Hold the bat with one hand right around the center of gravity and throw a batting donut up into the air and try to catch it on the bat. This should be fairly easy. Now move to the end of the bat handle and try to catch the donut, it should be much harder. Choking up increases your control a lot. It also assists in bunting when one hand should be holding the bat at the center of gravity.

You're right. If you're using a 34'' or 36'' bat try using a 32'' or 33''. Some people use a longer bat and choke up because the longer bat will weigh more. Mass x Exceleration = Force. Most people that do that are just more comfortable choking up on a bat. You'll usually hear someone say that if you are swinging late at pitches.

With 2 strikes, you generally always choke up on the bat, move closer to the plate to take away the outside strike and turn your back foot towards first base or third (righty vs. lefty) and this will allow better bat control and also a quicker swing so that there is a greater percentage of putting the ball in play.

Its a very good question.

If you choke up on the bat, there are some disadvantages and advantages.

Choking up on the bat, allows the hitter to have better control, bat speed, and power on the ball. It can make the ball travel further, because it is a lot easier to gather momentum with the bat.

However choking up on the bat decreases range across the plate. If you choke up then you'll have a harder time going the other way across the field. Pitchers will have a tendancy to throw to the outside on a quick and a batter who chokes up.

You wouldn't use a shorter bat because some players also choke up, because they are more comfortable not touching the end nub on the bat. Therefor if you used a shorter bat then you would be hugging the knob.

it gives you more control. but it will give you less range across the plate, be careful with 2 strikes. ur best bet is to start lifting and get used to swinging the bat. i personally like a smaller bat. its odd to see a power hitter like me using a 33 23 but i get more power off of them. as where my 11 year old sister is about my size and swings a 34. use what works best for you.
