It depends entirely on the age and size of the wearer, also the way that the tartan sits - the idea is to make the kilt appear seamless. The most popular length would be around 5 yards - but it goes up to a fairly ludicrous 10 yards - depending on the customer's specification - think of the weight and the heat!!!

The 'tradition' (as set by Sir Walter Scott - a somewhat romantic writer of pulp-fiction in his day) was for a full 8 or 9 yards of cloth. Kilts were banned as a weapon of war before this and Sir Walter was considered responsible for re-inventing the 'traditional' Scottish highland dress.

The simple problem - what if it were to rain - how heavy can a woven woollen cloth get???

SInce it rains a good wee bit in Scotland - the idea of dragging 10 yards of cloth around would probably not be a whole lot of fun.

I prefer trousers myself.
