there was a 90's group that had a heavy set woman singing the lead vocals but in the video and in performances they used a thinner girl to lip-synch her vocals. does anyone know the name of the group?

C&C Music Factory - It was for their huge hit Everybody Dance Now. The video showed a petite, cute singer but it was really a heavier set woman.

Zelma Davis is a Liberian singer who rose to fame as one of the featured vocalists for C&C Music Factory. She appeared in the video for C&C's #1 Hot 100 hit "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)" where she lip synced to Martha Wash's vocals.

C & C Music Factory and Black Box both did this. Martha Wash was hired to sing lead vocals for their songs but in the videos, thinner and more attractive models were hired to lip-synch the songs.

The "overweight" woman was Martha Wash and Zelma Davis did the lip synching. Wash sued as to receive credit for singing so everyone didn't think is was Zelma doing the singing as shown on the video.
